Projects in Progress

Under Law "ACT" Forum Theatre - 2009

SUMMARY
In coordination with Kafa (the Arabic word for "Enough" to stop violence and abuse) and a coalition of local NGOs, KHAYAL implemented an itinerant theatre, staging an interactive play that dramatizes a case of family violence. As an integral part of the play, attendees are asked to comment, voice their opinion and, eventually, act out themselves a different end to the story! The work of the actors is supplemented by lawyers from Kafa who introduce the draft law on the Protection of Women from Family Violence and discuss it with the audience both on and off stage. After the sessions, the audience was invited to sign a petition in support of the new draft law.

BACKGROUND
This project falls within the framework of the "Protection, Empowerment, Prevention (PEP) Means and strategies to eradicate violence against women" initiative. It is the fruit of the joint efforts between lawyers and social workers from the Kafa Organization, as well as theatre specialists from KHAYAL and other experts in the field of psychosocial intervention. It helps in creating a safe space for women to talk about their problems and voice their concerns. At the same time, using a dynamic and interactive approach, it allows other members of local communities to experience the violence and abuse that women are victims to. The draft law on the Protection of Women from Family Violence is the result of the work of women’s rights groups and a campaign by the Lebanese Ministry of Justice to increase sanctions on violence in homes and abuse against women.

TARGET GROUPS
- Women victims of domestic abuse and gender-based violence
- Local communities

OBJECTIVE(S)
Support the new draft law against domestic abuse of women and gender-based violence through advocacy
Empower women with the necessary tools to improve their protection
Enhance society's awareness of gender-based violence through preventive and sensitizing activities

Now Running Development & Awareness - 2012

SUMMARY
"Veiling/Unveiling" is a 3-phase intercultural seminar involving 3 organizations: Une Terre Culturelle from France, Dock Europe from Germany and KHAYAL from Lebanon. Each of the participating organizations will delegate 8 participants and 1 team leader. Each organization will also organize one of the phases of the seminar in its respective home country. The seminar will deal with the ideas of "hiding, veiling and concealing" and their counterparts at the opposite end of the spectrum "showing, unveiling and discovering" using photography. The focus will revolve around different concealment processes such as those used to hide certain places (places reserved for men and cut off from the outside, sites with no public access, etc,) as well as the various ways in which people “veil” (clothe/cover) themselves, by adopting a constructive approach that relies on photography and perception to address the meanings behind the acts of veiling, hiding and concealing objects and people. At the end of each phase, the organizers will hold an exhibition to showcase a selection of the participants’ photos.

BACKGROUND
The backdrop of this thematic seminar is the controversy over the wearing of the veil that has been going on over the past few years in Germany and France.

TARGET GROUPS
8 participants + 1 team leader from each country.
The seminar addresses people of different ages working in youth structures or in cultural/artistic fields. One essential condition for eligibility is the interest of all participants in using photography as a medium in intercultural work, without any other prior experience or knowledge required.

OBJECTIVE(S)
Overcoming prejudices based on stereotypes and misrepresentations in the media among a group of French, Lebanese and German animators to promote tolerance and encourage integration among different cultures.
